What is eCommerce?

eCommerce or electronic commerce simply refers to the buying and selling goods or services using the internet. eCommerce involves transactions that occur over the internet in an exchange of value.

More formally, eCommerce can be defined as digitally enabled commercial transactions between and among organizations and individuals.
KENNETH C. LAUDON AND CAROL GUERCIO TRAVER (2019), E-COMMERCE 2019: BUSINESS, TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIETY

I always looked at eCommerce as an interdisciplinary (or rather multidisciplinary) field. Commerce represents the business, marketing and sales; and Electronic addresses digital technology and information management.

There is a reason why eCommerce favours a small “e” and a capital “C”! It's a matter of importance. At the end of the day, it is all about commerce. The goal is to transact business  with an exchange of value, and the “e” is just a tool to get you there. eCommerce will eventually impact all aspects of commerce. Omnichannel experiences will become more ubiquitous, and customers can move seamlessly from mobile to website to in-store purchasing. As most commerce will be eCommerce by the near future, we might need to drop the “e” entirely at a point.
